The FBI has a storage problem. They've got 50,000,000 sets of fingerprints to store, and they're adding 5,000 a day. With that large a population, even very small file sizes add up. So researchers at the University of Texas at Austin used a evolutionary algorithm to create a better image compression format. Compressed fingerprint image quality increases after generations of genetic algorithm compression!
