The Autism Numbers, is there an epidemic?

A brief look at anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker's book on Autism and its history. It was first described in medical journals by Leo Kanner in 1943. English Historian William of Newburgh described children who would today no doubt be diagnosed as autistic in the 12th century. Is autism an epidemic or was it just largely unnoticed?
